Celebrating 20 Years Sewing in the Desert

Community Service

Tucson Chapter members contribute more than 20,000 sewing hours annually toward community outreach. Large sew-a-thons, smaller groups and individuals are all part of a network who donate time and sewing talents toward making a difference in the lives of the disadvantaged.

Quilts & Blankets: The choice of charities receiving the quilts and blankets was left up to the local groups. The Veterans Hospital and Retirement Home recieved 82 lap quilts. Over 120 receiving blankets went to Nogales Hospital for wrapping newborns for their trip home. For more information, click here.

Quilts of Valor for Returning Armed Forces

Last year two Quilts of Valor were created by members of the Tucson Chapter of the American Sewing Guild. This year block kits will be ready for pick-up after June 1. The blocks should be ready to assemble in September. Those wishing to participate please contact Patti Lane at Patti1121@msn.com or 520-575-1790/strong>.

AVIVA
Many items are made throughout the year to support AVIVA Child Protective Services, which provides for children in foster care. These children enter foster care with little or no possessions. Members spend many hours making clothing, bags, & Christmas stockings to help provide for them.

AVIVA Christmas Stockings: Each year, Chapter member Carol Backus leads an outreach to make Christmas stockings for foster kids under the care of AVIVA. To learn more, click here.

AVIVA Sundresses: The Northwest NG makes sundresses for AVIVA. These brightly colored and embellished garments are lovingly crafted to bring joy to a little girl's heart.
AVIVA Totebags:

Every year members participate on AVIVA's Bag Day. Aviva needs over 4,000 bags of every size to store toiletries, blankets and other needed items for children in foster care.

Beanbags for Libraries:

Every September, the Westside Neighborhood Group makes piles of cloth beanbags filled with rice. They are given to libraries to provide hours of play during children's story time. For more info, click here.

Chemo Caps:

The AZ Oncology Foundation and the American Cancer Society offer a Chemo Cap (or turban) lending program. Chemotherapy patients who have lost their hair get 1 wig and 2 caps per year. With an ongoing need for more than 1,000 caps annually, the ASG Chapter supports the cause. To read more, click here.

Military Support – Coolers/Warmers:
As US Armed Services members deploy to globally hostile enviroments, sewing enthusiasts rally to make comfort measures to help troops endure the elements. Cool ties and helmet warmers/coolers are the primary focus. For more background, click here.
